Challenges of reef restoration
1. Out-planting & Growth Bottlenecks: Even when coral fragments are propagated and out-planted, many fail to attach, grow slowly, or perish in the field. Many programs find that the high cost of materials, labour and maintenance make large-scale deployment impractical. PMC+1

Why it matters:
Without faster growth, higher survivorship and streamlined workflows, restoration remains niche rather than global.

2. Recruitment & Genetic Diversity Gaps: Coral larval settlement, recruitment and genetic diversity remain major bottlenecks. Many restored sites lack the natural cues, substrate or conditions for larvae to settle and survive. American Chemical Society Publications+1

Why it matters:
Without healthy recruitment and diversity there is risk of monocultures, low resilience and limited long-term success.

3. Bleaching & Thermal Stress Vulnerability: Heat stress, bleaching, rising temperatures and other global conditions mean that restored corals often face the same mortality as wild ones. OUP Academic+1
